Man Indicted for Bus Stop Rape of Mother Holding Child

COLUMBUS (Kate Liebers) -- A man accused of raping a mother while she was holding her toddler at a bus stop has been indicted with four first-degree felony counts, according to Franklin County Prosecutors Office.

A grand jury indicted Ronald Eugene Ayers, 34, with one first-degree felony count of rape with specifications, two first-degree felony counts of kidnapping with specifications, and one third-degree felony count of having a weapon under disability.

The charges stem from the Oct. 21 reported assault of a mother who was waiting for a COTA bus at the intersection of N. Ohio Avenue and E. Long Street with her young daughter. Ayers allegedly approached the woman around 6:30 a.m., ordered her and her toddler to walk to a nearby vacant area, and raped her as she held her child, Prosecutor Ron OBrien stated in a release.

Ayers allegedly used a firearm to facilitate the rape and kidnapping, according to the indictment.

Ayers then allegedly walked the mother and daughter back to the bus stop, threatened them, and watched them board the bus. The victim told the bus driver she had been raped after the bus pulled away, OBrien said.
Ayers is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
