Funerals Set for Six Who Died in Upper Arlington Crash
DUBLIN (Jen French)Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon for the six family members who died in a crash that involved an Upper Arlington Police officer.
Officer Shawn Paynter was on his way to a robbery at McDonalds when his cruiser struck the familys car at Dublin and Fishinger roads early Friday morning. Investigators reviewed video from the crash and said Paynters traffic light was green. Investigators also said Paynter had his lights and sirens during the run.
The six people who were killed in the crash are Eid Badi Shahad, 39, his wife Entisar W. Hameed, 31 and their four children, Shuaa Badi, 16, Amna Badi, 14, Ekbal Badi, 12 and Lina Badi, 2.
Services are being held at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center at 5001 Wilcox Road, Dublin OH at 5:00 PM.
The family leaves behind 5 surviving sons. The oldest is 16. The boys were with their grandmother at the time of the crash.
Neighbors tell ABC 6/FOX 28 that the people who died were Iraqi refugees who moved to Columbus in 2009.
After everything they've been though--the war torn Iraq, Awil Mohamed said, neighbor. They tried to change their lives--get an education. Come to America. This is a tragedy."
Paynter was treated for head injuries at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was released Friday night.
A relative will take care of the surviving children.
