Man Steals $8,000 Worth of Shoes From Local Business
NORTH COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- A brazen burglar caught on camera. Tonight, Central Ohio authorities need your help finding the man, store managers say stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a business. It happened at City Gear, on 3463 Cleveland Avenue, in North Columbus.
Construction workers were hard at work Sunday, patching a gaping four foot hole in the wall. Employees say a man somehow managed to open the back door of the strip mall, into a hallway then bust through the wall, then went into the store's back room.
Jonathan Stewart noticed the hole, when he opened the store and turned on the lights this morning. "I was kind of shocked because yesterday, I closed. When we closed yesterday, none of that was there yesterday," Stewart said.
But, cameras were there. Surveillance video shows the crook coming in, around 10:45, last night. Store managers say he made his way to a couple racks of shoes, filled with boxes. He took 40 pair of timberlands and 20 Nikes, then made his way right out the hole where he came in.
Workers say the man took $8,000 worth of shoes. It's a crime employees say will eventually put a strain on business. Kris Hope is the store's assistant manager. "When it starts to get cold, we're going to probably feel that loss. We're probably going to feel that loss of customers and what people want because a few items had got taken from us last night," Hope said.
That's why workers there want other businesses to invest in equipment to protect their merchandise. "If you don't got cameras in your store to get them because there's nothing like walking into a camera. There's no place to run," Hope said.
Clinton Township police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office are investigating the case. Store managers say the alarm in the store was set, but for some reason, it didn't go off.
This marks the first time city gear has been burglarized.
