UPDATE: Fayette Co. Escaped Inmate Dies After Crash

FAYETTE COUNTY (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- An escaped inmate was pronouched dead Monday after crashing a stolen vehicle while attempting to flee deputies.

Authorities were transporting the inmate, David L. Payne -- who had complained of a medical emergency -- to Fayette County Memorial Hospital when he overpowered a deputy and stole a vehicle from an area behind the medical center, according to investigators.

Payne, 27, led pursuing deputies on a chase through Fayette County that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. 

Payne drove over spike strips as he approached the Pickaway/Ross County line, then traveled approximately one-and-a-half miles before the vehicle flipped, ejecting him from the car.

He was rushed to Berger Hospital, where he died.  

Fairfield County deputies are investigating the inmate's escape, while their Pickaway County counterparts are conducting a probe into the crash.

No deputies were hurt during the chase.
