Improved Health Center Opens in S. Columbus
COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Ken Hines) -- The opening of an improved wellness facility is providing residents on the city's South Side with increased access to health care -- as well as a center of civic pride.
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman (D) was among those gathered for the dedication of the John Maloney Health and Wellness Center on Monday at 1905 Parsons Ave., near the old Schottenstein Department Store.
The new, state of the art center is the second version of the Maloney Center to open in the area, replacing the original facility that was torn down years ago.
Area resident Steven Milner is among those happy to see the health center return to the neighborhood.
"There was just a lot of people that did not get the proper healthcare, so that was just a big problem," Milner said. "I'm glad that they put that up there, so they can help the community."
Darece Byrd hopes the center's updated features will come to serve as a source of pride for the area's residents.
"A lot of stuff is old, and a lot of buildings are abandoned, so when something new comes along, hopefully it'll bring the morale of the community up, and it will be better," Byrd said.
