Fayette Co. Deputy Resigns After Keys Used in Ill-Fated Escape

FAYETTE COUNTY (Ken Hines) -- A deputy has resigned after her lost handcuff keys were used by an inmate during an escape attempt that ended in his death.

Fayette County Jail Deputy Shannon Plumlee resigned from her position on Tuesday, a day after escaped inmate David Payne died from injuries sustained when he crashed a stolen car in Pickaway County while attempting to flee pursuing authorities.

According to a statement from Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, Deputy Plumlee dropped her handcuff keys while breaking up a fight between Payne and another inmate at the jail.

Payne picked up the keys, and used them to unlock his handcuffs while being transported to a nearby hospital after complaining of a medical emergency. He then overpowered a deputy, and stole the car he would eventually crash, causing his death.

Plumlee did not report the loss of her keys until Payne escaped from custody, according to Sheriff Stanforth.

Plumlee was not involved in the attempted transportation of Payne to the hospital, during which he made his escape.
