Accused Scammer Arrested in Toledo Area
TOLEDO (Maria Durant) -- The man accused of impersonating a police officer and scamming people out of money in Franklin County was arrested last week in the Toledo area.
According to Toledo Municipal court documents, Joseph Steward was arrested on October 17 during a traffic stop when police found crack cocaine in his car.
Police say during their investigation, they learned that Steward solicited $50 from a carry-out employee as he posed as a lieutenant of the Lucas County Sheriffs office collecting donations on behalf of the departments charities.
Columbus Police Detective Erik Stoddard says its the same type of scam Steward is accused of doing in Franklin County.
Stoddard says, We want to bring him back down here because we have a lot of victims. Many are now coming forward.
The detective believes there are more than three-hundred possible victims.
Steward is charged with impersonating a police officer, theft and possession of drugs.
