Fmr. Delaware Co. Corrections Officer Gets 15-Years to Life for Rape of Child
MARION (Ken Hines) -- A former Delaware County Corrections officer will spend at least 15 years in prison after he was convicted of raping a 5-year-old girl.
A Marion County Common Pleas judge sentenced Randy Spencer to 15-years to life behind bars on Friday, just over a week after a jury found the 28-year-old guilty of sexually assaulting the child while babysitting.
"We are very happy that we were able to get justice for the 5-year-old victim in this case, who was extremely brave throughout this entire process," Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said.
Spencer was convicted of four counts of rape after allegedly forcing the young victim to perform sex acts on him multiple times over a 10-month period that stretched from June, 2012 to April, 2013.
The alleged abuse occurred while the child was under the care of Spencer and his girlfriend, who operated an in-home daycare program.
Spencer maintained his innocence after his sentence was announced on Friday.
"It's tough knowing that I am going to be sitting in prison for something that I did not do, but I know that I have an appeal, and that I'm going to work with the support of my family and loved ones and my friends to get to that appeal," Spencer said.
Spencer was working as a Delaware County Corrections Officer at the time of his arrest. He previously worked as a Marion County Sheriff's Deputy and an auxiliary officer.
