Veterans Rally Against Plans to Tear Down Veterans Memorial
DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS (Jen French)Servicemen and women are taking a stand against possible plans to tear down Veterans Memorial.
Saturday morning, the American Legion 12th District held a motorcycle ride and rally. Bikers rode from AMVETS on Broad Street to Veterans Memorial to gather support.
Tim Shigley, 2nd Vice Commander for the American Legion of Ohio 12th District Council, is worried veteran services and get-togethers will have to be held elsewhere. Shigley has learned the remodeling of the Scioto Peninsula could mean Veterans Memorial will get demolished. He wants to convince Franklin County Commissioners to keep the building.
The Columbus Downtown Development Corporation proposal would demolish and replace it with an interactive museum and amphitheater. A smaller Veterans Memorial could appear in its place.
This is not exactly what everybody thought it was. Shigley said.
Vietnam veteran David Bliss would like to see the building remodeled instead.
People in this town dont realize how much Veterans Memorial has done for veterans, Bliss said.
