Website Responds After Posting Online Confession
COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) -- BecauseISaidIWould.com is a website for people to keep their promises, but the site is gaining widespread attention for a video recently posted of a man confessing to killing another man.
Matt Cordle of Powell looks into the camera and admits he was drinking and driving when he went the wrong way on I-670 in June. He crashed into another car, killing 61 year-old Vince Canzani.
Alex Sheen runs the website. He said Cordle sent him a message on Facebook before making the video.
"He messages me and said the guilt is insurmountable," Sheen said. "(He) told me he was at fault in that accident."
Hundreds of thousands of people have watched the video. It's not become a topic of conversation across the country.
"(Cordle) is just glad people are watching it," Sheen said. "(And they're) getting the message 'don't drink and drive'."
Cordle's lawyer said he didn't think his client would go through with making the video before he was charged.
Some have discussed whether Cordle will get a lighter sentence in exchange for the public humiliation and confession, but Sheen said Cordle is just trying to turn something horrific into something positive.
"As long as people are watching this and making that promise to never drink and drive, then Matt can feel, I guess, better, but not good, never good," Sheen said.
A grand jury is expected to take up his case on Monday. Cordle's attorney said his client hopes to avoid a trial.
