Soldier Surprises Children Coming Home

DUBLIN (Ben Garbarek) -- Two students at Glacier Ridge Elementary School got a big surprise during a back-to-school pep rally Thursday.

Caeden and McKenny Sommer had not seen their dad in four months.  Major Darren Sommer has been serving in the Army Reserve in Kuwait all summer.

The kids expected him home on Saturday, but he made a surprise appearance at the pep rally.

"It was amazing," Major Sommer said.  "I've missed them so much.  It's hard being away from your family.  These are the ones that have the hardest time with deployments, not knowing where we are or what we're doing, so seeing them and hugging them again is just a blessing."

Major Sommer has been deployed twice.  He served for nearly a year and a half in Afghanistan in 2007.  He worked as a flight surgeon.

He said he is now home for good and looking forward to spending time with his family and eating "real food" that's not served on a paper plate.
