Authorities Charge Driver of Bus that Killed Nationwide Children's Worker

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- The driver of a bus that fatally struck a Nationwide Children's Hospital employee in May was charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter on Monday.

Prosecutors allege that Karl Beem's failure to control a shuttle bus caused the death of David Newsom, who was killed when he was struck by the vehicle in front of the hospital on May 29, 2013.

Newsom, 35, was the technical director for the the Biomedical Genomics Core in the Hospital's Research Institute. He was struck, along with colleague Dr. Peter White, while walking in the road in front of the facility.

White, the core's director, was treated at Grant Medical Center for injuries caused by the bus strike.

"[The bus] seemed at a high rate of speed," witness Beverly Newsome said at the time of Newsom's death. "They went up in the air. It drug the one guy."

Beem is scheduled to appear in a Franklin County courtroom on August 16.
