Thief Steals Medals from Vietnam Veteran
NORTHEAST COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) -- A Vietnam War veteran is looking for his medal after he said a thief took them from his apartment.
David Cornute Sr. noticed the medals were gone two weeks ago.
"I was devastated," Cornute said. "You can't get them again. Once you lose something like that it's not like you can go to the store and buy those."
The former paratrooper still has a few medals left. There were no obvious signs someone broke into his apartment. There is a lock on the door to his bedroom where the medals were kept, so Cornute said someone must have had a key.
"This is a quiet thief," he said. "I mean this guy is good. Whoever he is, he's good at what he does. He's just lucky I didn't catch him."
Cornute said he was shot down three times in Vietnam, but luckily was never seriously hurt. He said the medals mean far more to him than it would mean to anyone else.
"It doesn't do them any good," he said. "They might want to look good someplace and wear them, so if somebody sees somebody with all that stuff that wasn't in the Army, call police and let me know."
It wasn't just the medals the thief took too. Cornute lost several suits from his closet, some cash from his bedroom and even food from his fridge.
