THURSDAY: Sex Addictions

DOCTOR ON SEX ADDICTIONS (Kellie Hanna) Dr. Bob Stinson, Psy.D., J.D., ABPP, is a Board Certified Forensic Psychologist and joins Pete and Shawn to talk about sex addictions.

Stinson says, "I don't believe we have scientific evidence that "sex addiction" is, in fact, an addiction. I'm not terribly surprised by the recent UCLA study findings. At the same time, I would comment that neither that study nor that study combined with the collection of other studies has definitively proven "sex addiction" is not an addiction. In other words, from a strictly scientific viewpoint, whether "sex addiction" is an addiction or not has neither been proven nor disproven. What we know, however, is there are a certain segment of people for whom their "hyper-sexuality" becomes problematic and significantly interferes with their functioning.  That's true whether we call it an "addiction" or not."

Although the American Psychiatric Association has yet to recognize sexual addiction as an official diagnosis (they may call it hypersexual disorder), chances are you've heard the term. Characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts, people with a sex addiction supposedly have an inability to control sexual behavior, even when it's risky or harmful.

"It's not about sex, it's about obsession," says Robert Weiss, the founding director of the Sexual Recovery Institute, in Los Angeles.
