THURSDAY: Let Dana Do It #3
LET DANA DO IT (Kellie Hanna) Meteorologist Dana Turtle is in Upper Arlington with a grandmother to help her bake for the Ohio State Fair.
Dana Turtle is helping Cathy make gingerbread quick bread to enter into a contest at the fair.
Every year Cathy enters baking contests at the fair and this year she is entering 63 different baking contests from biscuits to cakes to quick breads.
She says she has been baking for 20 to 25 years.
In just the past two years, she has won dozens of awards and ribbons that she displayed on a table in her living room for Dana and us to see.
Cathy had Dana combine all of the dry ingredients that he combined with the wet ingredients to make the batter.
They put that finished batter into a pan that had been greased with shortening and dusted with flour.
They baked it at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
Cathy says most of the baking is done a day or two before the competition, but she bakes her cakes ahead of time and freezes them.
She says the cakes are easier to frost if they are partly frozen.
Even though Dana did a good job helping Cathy with her prized baking, he said he hadn't baked since the early 1990's.
