WEDNESDAY: Turtle Around Town: Lifeguard Safety #1
TURTLE AROUND TOWN: LIFEGUARD SAFETY (Kellie Hanna) Meteorologist Dana Turtle is downtown Columbus at Dodge Pool for lifeguard safety lessons.
Dana says he used to be a lifeguard and even taught swimming lessons the summer between his high school and college years so he does have a bit of experience with this.
The "real" lifeguard there at the pool shows techniques for how to save a person by using a 180 pound plastic "dummy doll" and his guard floating strap.
There are other tools that can be used as well to help someone who is having a problem swimming but not actually drowning.
Lifeguards also go through training to get a child who is at the bottom of the pool. They use bricks as their training tools and can either go in feet first or dive in head first.
Drowning is never something that should be taken lightly or teased about. It is a serious matter that kids and adults can be effected by. If there is a person having trouble in the water, a lifeguard should always be notified.
