Columbus Positions Itself as Gay-Friendly City in DNC Bid
COLUMBUS (Chris Vanocur) -- Columbus leaders are hosting a swanky Washington D.C. party for the Democratic National Committee on Thursday night.
This is part of the citys attempt to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and comes just one day after Columbus officially filed its bid for the 2016 Republican National Convention. ABC 6 has noticed a different approach towards each party.
In trying to lure the GOP Convention to Columbus, officials emphasized traditional selling points: proximity, walkability, entertainment, fine dining and the fact that Ohio is an important political swing state. And while Democrats are getting this same convention pitch, theyre also being told about something else.
The invitation to the Democratic National Committee party Thursday also mentions that Columbus has been Named a national leader for LGBTQ Equality. In other words, Columbus is reminding the Democratic Party that it has a strong reputation for being a gay friendly city. This, convention boosters freely admit, was not a strategy employed with the Republicans.
Given President Obamas pro-gay rights stances, as well as the number of politically minded gay activists in the Democratic Party, Columbus two-tiered approach may ultimately be a sound one.
