Cyclist Seriously Injured in Chillicothe Hit-Skip
CHILLICOTHE (Lu Ann Stoia) -- A Chillicothe man is out on bail following yet another hit-skip bicycle crash in central Ohio.
Emmitt Beeler, 60, has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault after allegedly crashing into a cyclist last Saturday around dusk.
As of Tuesday, the cyclist was still in serious condition at Ohio State University Medical Center.
Beeler had called police following the crash, reporting that he thought he hit a deer.
Chillicothe Police Officer Bud Lytle said it would be unusual to see a deer in that area.
Officers have said they have reason to believe Beeler was intoxicated at the time of the crash. The lab results are pending.
According to police reports, Jason Butterbaugh was riding his bike with another man against traffic on a roadway near downtown, which is a violation of the state's bike laws.
Ohio law states bicyclists should ride with the traffic, as they are governed by the same laws as automobiles.
Officers said Butterbaugh was also not wearing reflective clothing or a helmet.
"Always wear a helmet," Lytle said. "Whether you are on the roadway or not, the helmet is there to protect you in case something of this nature might happen."
