SHOOTING SPREE: Gunman Critically Wounds 9-year-old Boy in Grove City

GROVE CITY (Ken Hines) -- A young boy who was shot after answering his front door is fighting for his life at a Columbus hospital.

The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m at 2716 Independence Way. It marked the beginning of a violent spree that ended with the death of suspect Danny Thornton.

Thornton allegedly shot 9-year-old Jaiden Dixon in the face at his Grove City home. The boy's mother shares an 18-year-old son with Thornton.

That 18-year-old was inside the home at the time of the shooting, along with his mother and 17-year-old brother.

Dixon is listed in critical condition at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Investigators believe Thornton fled the property after the shooting, and immediately drove to a dentist's office where he shot employee Vicki Vertin, the mother of another one of his children.

Approximately two hours later, Thornton was killed while engaging in a shootout with police at Walmart on Morse Road. An officer was wounded during that shootout; he is expected to survive.
