Fundraiser for Melissa's House, a Home for People with Mental Illness
COLUMBUS (Tara Morgan) -- A first look at a house slated for renovation and expansion to provide a safe and comfortable place for people with mental illness to live.
Melissa's House is being created in honor of Melissa Goldberg who died after her battle with schizoaffective disorder in 2006.
Her parents bought an historic house on Jefferson Avenue for a $5 million renovation project.
It would create 10 independent apartments to open next summer.
"We had another location in the city and all the neighbors complained that they didn't want the people in the neighborhood sick," said Nate Goldberg, Melissa's father.
The Goldberg's envision a warm, comfortable space for recovery and education in Melissa's memory.
"We're trying to remove the stigma by educating not only people's families with mental illness but entire community," said Elaine Goldberg, Melissa's mother.
The supportive living facility will have a 24 hour staff on hand.
Renovations begin in November with the doors scheduled to open in June 2014.
A fundraiser is planned for next Friday, September 20th.
The Golf and Game Outing is from 11:30 A.M. to 7:30 P.M. at the Winding Hollow Golf Club.
