2009 Home Invasion Victim Dies in W. Columbus
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- The victim of a violent, unsolved home invasion died Wednesday, four years after he was brutally attacked.
Shane Johnson died after a week in hospice care while suffering from an undisclosed condition.
Shane, 43, was robbed and severely beaten in 2009 by three masked men who forced their way into his West Columbus home.
Doctors initially doubted Shane's ability to survive the assault, according to his father.
"The hospital said he wasn't going to live when we went down there," Don Johnson said.
Shane survived his injuries, but required massive reconstructive surgery that included the insertion of pins and a metal plate in order to hold his face together.
Don -- who operated an auto repair business with his son before the home invasion -- said Shane was never the same after the beating, and suffered through constant pain until his death.
"He suffered all these four years, and maybe now he can rest in peace," Don said. "But for myself, it was a terrible loss."
Police still hope to one day bring Shane's attackers to justice, but do not believe his death can be directly linked to the 2009 beating.
