TODAY: Ramps Closing from I-270 to US 23 in Worthington

WORTHINGTON (Tom Bosco/Sean Rowe) -- Starting Monday, the Ohio Department of Transportation is closing the existing ramps from I-270 to US 23 and replacing them with redesigned ramps. The project is being done as a safety improvement.

Drivers have been seeing signs promising permanent closures of the exiting ramps from westbound 270 to 23 north and from eastbound 270 to 23 north. But, Ohio DOT said the ramp closures won't happen until the new ramps are functional.

Drivers call merging from 270 to 23 a nightmare, in which exiting traffic must compete with traffic entering the interstate.

"People don't understand how to merge," said Kenyata Elmore, who drives through the area for business regularly. "I just almost got hit coming off of 270 at High St. just now."

Here's a list of the permanent ramp closures for Monday. These ramps will close:

 - The two loop ramps closing are I-270 east to US 23 north, and I-270 west to US 23 south.
 - These ramps wont close until the new ramps to US 23 from I-270 are open.
 - Instead of two separate ramps for US 23 north and south, theres one exit ramp for both directions of US 23.
 - The loop ramps are closing permanently because thats one of the problems with the interchange too many vehicles vying for the same spot of pavement.
 - Closing the loop ramps will stop the weaving and merging.
 - Switching traffic to the new ramps will be done over two nights, weather permitting.
 - Sunday into Monday morning I-270 west to US 23.
 - Traffic signal at the end of the ramp; two lanes for US 23 north, one lane US 23 south.
 - Monday into Tuesday morning I-270 east to US 23.
 - Traffic signal at the end of the ramp; two lanes for US 23 north, one lane US 23 south.
 - When the North Side Fix project is complete in 2016, there will be three lanes for US 23 north and two for US 23 south.
 - Construction started last year.
 - The project will reconfigure these ramps, build a trench 25-feet below the surface for two new US 23 northbound express lanes and construct a new bridge over I-270 that is a gateway for Worthington.
 - The project, which costs approximately $75 million, is expected to be complete late 2016.
