COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Ohio's capital is best known among sports fans as the home of Buckeye football, but it's the city's commitment to golf and soccer that is gaining the attention of the international athletic community.
Central Ohio will play host to two major sporting events in 2013 -- USA's World Cup Qualifier against Mexico on September 10 at Crew Stadium, and October's President's Cup golf tournament at Muirfield Village.
Columbus has become the go-to city for the USA soccer team when the squad needs a big win against Mexico. The Americans are 3-0 in games played in Columbus against our southern neighbors.
"Columbus is a player in the global soccer market. We have an impact," the Crew's Mark McCullers said.
Golf fans are already well acquainted with Muirfield's facilities due to the annual Memorial Tournament, but October's President's Cup provides the city with an opportunity to put on a show for a large international audience.
