Simply Home Safety While You're Away

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Burglars don’t take vacations. It’s a fact that many are known to wait until you go on yours to strike the place you call home.

To make sure you have a home safe home even when you’re away, ABC6/Fox28 News’ Steve Levine checked out a few simple, inexpensive things you can do.

For less than $10, you can buy a motion detector light and a security times at most local retailers. Also, over at George Vargo’s home, he keeps not one, but two locks on his rear patio doors.

"This is the season when solicitors come along. People want to fix your roof. You never know who is going to walk up," Vargo said.

When he and his wife head out of town, they let their neighbors know and they’ve gone as far as to notify local law enforcement -- the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

"I didn't realize the service was available,” he said. “It shocked me."

With a couple of days advance notice and at no cost, Delaware County deputies can walk around a property to make sure it hasn’t been broken in to.

Delaware Sheriff Walter Davis said, "We'll walk around the perimeter of the home…use another set of lights…light up this whole area…that is wonderful.”

Residents are also advised to not let mail pile up in their mailbox. It’s often an open invitation to thieves, signaling nobody’s home. Instead, temporarily halt mail service or have a friend pick up the mail while you’re gone.Simply Home Safety While You're Away
