Record Number of Fugitives Surrender in Cleveland
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Officials say a four-day program that allows fugitives to turn themselves in safely at a church has set a national record in the Cleveland area.
The U.S. Marshals say more than 7,400 fugitives surrendered Wednesday through Saturday as part of Fugitive Safe Surrender at Mt. Zion Church in Oakwood Village.
Officials say nearly 500 wanted felons turned themselves in -- clearing 12,000 outstanding warrants.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott created the program in 2005 after a fugitive shot and killed a police officer in Cleveland.
Since the program's beginning, some 30,000 fugitives have turned themselves in in 18 cities across the country.
