Fighting Back

Home Security Cameras Helping Victims, Police

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP -- A beating victim is on the mend and still fighting back against crime. In fact, his actions may help police officers bring the two people who attacked him to justice.

ABC6/Fox28 News’ Steve Levine learned that an inexpensive investment at more and more East Columbus homes is providing police with big clues to help them crack cases.

Surveillance cameras are proving to be an easy and effective way for homeowners to deter some crooks and help round up others. And, the hi-tech devices can be installed in just a matter of minutes.

It’s making a big impact on one man’s life, even after he found himself at the mercy of two attackers.

"He was just beating me, beating me"

“Ronald,” who asked that ABC6/Fox28 News not show his face, says two robbers beat him in an office attached to his home’s garage.

"My rib cage still hurts,” Ronald said. “He gashed me. I had stitches, all over."

Ronald says he fought back, but not with his fists. He used a security camera that he says he installed a few months ago after vandals targeted his car.

On the security camera video, two men are seen walking into Ronald’s office minutes before the attack. Soon after, one of the suspects throws a piece of asphalt through the door, hitting Ronald in his face.

The 62-year-old man received several stitches as a result of the brutal beating.

"They do not need to do this to anyone else. No one deserves a beating like that.”

Ronald says he actually recognized one of his attackers. It’s his cousin, Steven Justice. A warrant is now issued for his arrest regarding the robbery.

"To have a family member do that to you is just unreal"

Police are still working to identify another man. Ronald says the suspect left him bloody and unconscious. He can be seen fleeing the scene after stealing Ronald’s wallet, which was filled with cash.

"I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I don’t know how he could rob me.”
