Columbus St. Fights Back to Take Back the Night
COLUMBUS -- College (CSCC) and the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) teamed up Wednesday to co-sponsor "Take Back the Night" in the Discovery District. Students and staff from both colleges took part in the rape-prevention and crime-prevention march on Wednesday that started at 4 p.m.
The event began with a three-block march from CCAD to the Columbus State campus, followed by an open mic stage for "Shatter the Silence" poetry readings.
The "Take Back the Night" slogan dates back to 1977, when it was used as part of an anti-violence rally in Pittsburgh. Over the years, organizations using the slogan have focused on eliminating sexual violence in all forms. Thousands of colleges, universities, women's centers, and rape crisis centers now sponsor events annually across the country throughout the year.
Schedule:
4 - 4:15 p.m. - March from CCAD Crane Center to Nestor Hall at CSCC
5 - 6 p.m. - "Shatter the Silence" open stage – Nestor Hall West Lounge at CSCC
The Crane Center is located at the southeast corner of Cleveland Avenue and East Long Street. Map of Crane Center
The following related events preceded the march:
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. - BRUSH Experience and Take Back the Night PostSecret -- Nestor Hall Lobby and Nestor Hall West Lounge at CSCC
2:30 - 4 p.m. - World Café with international students -- CCAD Crane Center
About the events
B.R.U.S.H. Experience is a social experiment combining people and art to yield creative results. It is a community art project where the artist creates a mural and the community paints it, similar to a paint-by-number.
PostSecret is an art project created by Frank Warren in which people submit their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard. CSCC had a craft table where passersby can create postcards about sexual violence against women.
World Café is a way to facilitate dialogue which allows for deep, interactive conversation surrounding three question prompts. World Cafés include an inviting setting, meaningful questions, contribution from everyone, and great listening and sharing of diverse perspectives.
