MARION, Ohio -- Marion police say they've handled a record number of thefts and thefts and burglaries recently.
Officers responded to 62 thefts across the city in June, the highest theft rate since summer 2008, according to police.
There were 37 reported burglaries in June, down from 46 in May, records show.
May ranked as the largest one-month-total for burglaries in three years, according to police.
"Why it's happening now? I couldn't tell you. It could be unemployment. It could be someone with a drug habit. There's a variety of reasons," Lt. Matt Bayles said.
Bayles said the crimes are more prevalent on the northeast and southwest parts of the city.
Police are asking residents to quickly report any suspicious activity, as well as keep their homes secure.
