Young Boy Critically Injured in SW Columbus Crash

COLUMBUS -- A rollover crash on the Southwest Side critically injured a 7-year-old boy and sent his mother to the hospital on Friday morning.

Police say the mother's SUV was traveling on Hall Road at approximately 10:15 a.m. when it skidded off the north side of the road and rolled, hitting a tree.

The young boy was thrown from the vehicle; his mother was able to exit the car, where she screamed for assistance for her injured son.

"She was barefooted, just sitting on the ground screaming and crying, waiting for the ambulance to come help him," witness Christina Hannon said. "She had no thoughts of herself whatsoever."

An ambulance transported the young boy to Nationwide Children's Hospital in critical condition. The mother was taken to Mt. Carmel with non-life threatening conditions. Their names have not been released.

"Horrific, it was horrific," Hannon said of the accident.  "I can't imagine being in her shoes right now, and understand what it's like to [possibly] lose a child. I just pray for him."

Columbus Police are investigating the crash, and working to determine if the young boy was strapped into a car or booster seat.
