PERRY TOWNSHIP -- Emergency crews and heavy machinery were needed at a Licking County creek Friday, after a garbage trucked drove off a bridge and into the water below.
The truck crashed through the bridge's guardrail near Hickman and Dana Roads NE, then landed on its passenger side in the creek.
The truck's driver -- who was not injured -- was able to climb out of the vehicle without assistance.
"He was actually walking down the road, and one of my fire fighters saw him and then saw the bridge broken out on one side," Hanover Fire Chief Brian Spellman said. "[The fire fighter] figured he was involved in the accident, picked him up, and called 911."
An Environmental Protection Agency crew conducted a brief examination at the crash site to monitor a small amount of fuel that leaked from the truck into the waterway.
Cranes were brought to the creek to assist in the removal of the truck.
Dana Road is expected to remain closed throughout the weekend as crews work to determine if the bridge is safe for use.
