CANAL WINCHESTER -- The home on Busey Road is a total loss, amazingly tree people escaped the flames along with the family's three pets.
Investigators believe the fire started in the basement of the home around 2 p.m.
"There no way a person can live in that house," said homeowner Carroll Dixon.
Dixon, has live in his home for 30 years. It's where he married his wife and raised their three daughters.
"I was out running errands when my daughter called me and told me the house was on fire," he said.
Violet Township Fire Chief John Eisel says it's still unclear what started the fire.
According to Eisel, the fire was difficult to put out because the home was older and was not equipped with fire fail safes built between floor levels.
ABC6/FOX28 was on scene as Dixon recovered family photos and portrait of his wife. It survived the fired undamaged.
"I called her Penny. I always had a lucky penny in my pocket with her at my side and now I have a Penny up in heaven," said Dixon.
He says if possible, he'd like to rebuild.
"It's where my wife passed away at and I'd like to rebuild. I don't know what the Lord has planned for me. So I just gotta go on with what everybody else can help me out."
