GENOA TOWNSHIP -- The search continues for two men suspected in an attack on a Genoa Twp. police officer early Thursday morning.
Lt. Greg Yurkovich was assaulted near Sunbury and Maxtown Roads in Delaware County at approximately 5:30 a.m. The lieutenant was checking out a suspicious white box truck that was parked along an access road to the docks at Red Bank Harbor.
Yurkovich, 39, was confronted by two people while investigating the truck, and was soon attacked by one of the suspects, leaving the officer unconscious, according to Genoa Twp. Police Chief Robert Taylor.
Yurkovich suffered a severe concussion, and has been drifting in and out of consciousness while receiving treatment at Grant Medical Center.
Chief Taylor told ABC 6/FOX 28 that investigators are pursuing leads in their effort to find the suspects, but would not reveal specific information. Apprehending those responsible for the attack is a high priority for the department.
"Everybody's down. It could be any one of us," Sgt. Rich Lyon said. "We do have a tough job. It can sometimes can be a scary job. This is not really a coworker, more like a brother."
One suspect is described as a white male, 6'1" to 6'4" tall, approximately 300 lbs., with a buzzed hair cut and a beard. The second suspect is only described as a man with a smaller build. Both suspects were wearing dark hoodies at the time of the attack.
Anyone with information about the assault is encouraged to contact the Genoa Township Police Department at 740-833-2800.
