Student Recovering From Transplant

CLEVELAND – A Mansfield teacher and the first-grader to whom she donated a kidney are both continuing to recover after the procedure Tuesday. The child’s father says Nicole Miller’s kidney function is improving “to levels she has never seen in her life.”

Brian Miller said his daughter’s procedure went well Tuesday. But before Nicole’s surgery, they had to wait for Wendy Killian’s procedure to remove one of her two kidneys. Then came the wait.

“It was a little nerve-wracking,” Miller said.

Two days later, both patients are well. Nicole was born with just one kidney, and it was failing her. After nearly 20 donors failed to produce a match, the Miller family found a donor in one of the child’s teachers at Mansfield Christian School. Killian agreed to donate her kidney. Miller said Killian suffered dizziness and nausea the day after the surgery. Doctors say the recovery is usually rougher for the organ donor than the recipient.

“As of this afternoon, she’s doing much better,” Miller said of the woman who saved his daughter’s life. “She’s up walking around.”
