COLUMBUS -- Liz Vaccaro has known a lot of heartbreak. But nothing compares to what a burglar stole from her West Columbus home earlier this week- an urn containing her recently deceased mother’s ashes.
Her mother died in February, and Vaccaro had kept her remains close- in a purple urn.
The criminal broke into her South Roys Avenue home sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning, causing extensive damage to a window.
The urn was the only thing taken.
"The urn was purple and silver, and had an angel on it," said a tearful Vacarro. "It's been really hard since my mom passed. Living here with her. Taking care of her day in and day out- no help."
The urn later turned up in a relative's home. An officer took it to the police property room for safe keeping.
"She's in a dusty room by herself," said Vacarro. "That's not how this was supposed to have went."
Vaccaro has all the receipts showing she paid for it, along with other legal documents. But a police officer told her she'd need an
attorney and go to probate court.
ABC6 called the police property room, got a different answer. If Vacarro can show those documents, then her mother's ashes can be released to her.
"I can go get her." said a beaming Vacarro. "I can go get my mother! Thank you so much!
Vacarro says she'll pick up her mom sometime Thursday.
