Skaters Beware: Ice Still Thin in Central Ohio
Updated: Monday, February 4 2013, 08:38 PM EST
COLUMBUS -- Last week's record-warm temperatures caused much of the ice in central Ohio to become dangerously thin.
Despite the current freezing weather, all the area's Metro Park ice-skating ponds are closed as officials wait for the ice to thicken.
While central Ohio citizens are warned to stay off frozen water for the time being, the Columbus Fire Heavy Rescue unit isn't waiting for thicker ice to start training for emergencies.
"The minute we get ice on the water, we are out training our rescue companies, rescuing."
Experts say ice skaters can help assure their safety by following some simple guidelines:
- Be familiar with the ice on which you'd like to skate
- Check the ice before skating
- Look for any cracks or differences in color on the ice, which could indicate weak spots
- Skate in monitored areas, like Metro Parks
