COLUMBUS -- His restuarant is known for the best of the wurst and for being synonymous with the Columbus neighborhood German Village.
Schmidt's Sausage Haus founder and patriarch of the Schmidt family, George Schmidt, died Monday at the age of 91 in Columbus.
The Schmidt family already had been in business in meat packing for decades and had a concession stand at the Ohio State Fair since 1914.
In 1967, George Schmidt opened the restaurant in German Village and helped to create the city's Oktoberfest celebration.
The restaurant continues to be operated by the Schmidt family, with George's sons at the helm.
Schmidt died before noon on Monday.
He was not involved in day-to-day operations at the restaurant, but did participate in business decisions, a family spokesperson told ABC 6/FOX 28.
Schmidt family members declined comment Monday.
Funeral and visitation arrangements have not been made public yet.
