SCAM ALERT: Senior Citizens Targeted in Ohio
Updated: Thursday, May 2 2013, 08:18 PM EDT
COLUMBUS (Tom Sussi) -- According to the Ohio Department of Aging, scam artists are knocking on doors and telling homeowners they represent various senior citizen agencies. Their objective: to get personal information, or get inside victims' homes.
A few of these cases have been reported recently in southern Ohio. Luckily, the seniors sensed something was off, and didn’t fall for the scams.
The Ohio Department of Aging offers the following tips and information to help senior citizens protect themselves against scammers:
- Senior citizen agencies never just show up on doorsteps.
- Workers representing legitimate senior agencies always have identification.
- To verify an agency, call 1-866-243-5678.
- These sort of scammers often call victims at home, as well. Never give out personal information to someone you aren’t familiar with.
