Police: Driver Tried to Run Down Officer During UA Chase

UPPER ARLINGTON (Lu Ann Stoia/Ken Hines) -- A police chase through a normally quiet suburb almost took a tragic turn when a driver tried to run over an officer, according to investigators.

Evangelous George Makris is charged with attempted felonious assault and resisting arrest after allegedly swerving to hit Officer Brian Daron as he was placing stop sticks on the road in an effort to stop Makris's pickup truck. The incident was captured by a police cruiser dashcam.

Daron drew his gun after Makris's apparent attempt to run him down, but did not fire the weapon.

Officers began pursuing Makris after he ran multiple stop signs, according to Chief Brian Quinn. The chase was called off after Makris was identified to help ensure the safety of the officers and other drivers.

"At the end of the day, we want the community safe and the officers home safe,” Chief Quinn said.

Makris was eventually apprehended at his parent's Upper Arlington home, where he  punched an officer in the face during his arrest. according to investigators.

Makris is scheduled to appear in court on May 14.Police: Driver Tried to Run Down Officer During UA Chase
