Police Appeal to Suspect in Attack on Genoa Twp. Cop

Updated: Friday, April 26 2013, 07:16 PM EDT
GENOA TOWNSHIP -- Investigators are appealing to a suspect in an attack on a police officer in an effort to identify the man physically responsible for carrying out the assault.

Lt. Greg Yurkovich was assaulted near Sunbury and Maxtown Roads in Delaware County at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. The lieutenant was checking out a suspicious white box truck that was parked along an access road to the docks at Red Bank Harbor.

Yurkovich, 39, was confronted by two people of distinctly different statures while investigating the truck, and was subsequently attacked by the larger suspect, leaving the officer unconscious, according to Genoa Twp. Police Chief Robert Taylor.

Taylor said the smaller suspect objected to the assault on Yurkovich, and credits the man with possibly limiting the physical damage done to the officer.

"(Yurkovich) was dragged, and the second individual started yelling, 'Stop, stop, stop. Let's get out of here,'" Taylor said. "We believe, if not for the intervention of that man, the assault could have been much more serious."

Yurkovich suffered a severe concussion during the assault. He was treated at Grant Medical Center before being released on Friday afternoon.

Chief Taylor said the Genoa Twp., Columbus, Powell, Westerville, and Blendon Twp. police departments, as well as the FBI and Delaware Co. Sheriff's Office, are working together on a task force dedicated to the investigation into the attack.

"Everybody's down. It could be any one of us," Genoa Twp. Sgt. Rich Lyon said. "We do have a tough job. It can sometimes can be a scary job. This is not really a coworker, more like a brother."

The suspected assailant is described as a white male, 6'1" to 6'4" tall, approximately 300 lbs., with a buzzed hair cut and a beard. The second suspect is only described as a man with a smaller build. Both suspects were wearing dark hoodies at the time of the attack.

Anyone with information about the assault is encouraged to contact the Genoa Township Police Department at 740-833-2800.
