MOUNT VERNON -- Fire investigators don't yet know what ignited an apartment fire that claimed a man's life, and left several families homeless.
The fire started at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 209 Shirley Ave.
According to Mount Vernon Fire Chief Christopher Menapace, a man who was in one of the units on the backside of the complex was found dead.
Three other families who lived in the building were displaced, and the American Red Cross was assisting them with temporary food, clothing and shelter. One of those families has at least four children, the Fire Chief said.
The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, and investigators haven't said if it's suspicious or not.
The Knox County Coroner is expected to perform an autopsy on the body that was found.
As new information is released, we will update this story.
