Ohio Bill Would Make Cell Phone Theft a Felony

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 2013, 08:01 PM EDT
COLUMBUS -- Ohio lawmakers are pushing a bill that could make stealing a cell phone -- or any other electronic device with sensitive information -- a felony.

Under State Senate Bill 63, which was crafted by the Criminal Justice Committee, suspects arrested for stealing tablets, phones, and computers could face 5th degree felony charges.

Ohio lawmakers are the first in the country to consider such a law. Currently, stolen property must be worth at least $1,000 for a felony charge to be levied against a suspect.

Columbus police support the proposal, saying it could help in their efforts to combat cell phone theft, which have become more challenging recently, due in large part to ecoATMs -- machines that dispense cash in exchange for phones.
