ODOT Employee Killed in Fiery I-71 Semi Crash

Updated: Monday, April 22 2013, 07:59 PM EDT
DELAWARE COUNTY -- A fiery crash involving a semi killed an ODOT worker Monday morning, shutting down I-71 for hours.

Witnesses said the commercial semi swerved on to the berm near Africa Road just after 9 a.m., slamming into a backhoe operated by technician Lee Rizor, then catching fire. Rizor, 27, was declared dead at the scene.

The semi's driver suffered burns, but was able to escape the truck without assistance, according to witnesses.

Rizor -- a Mt. Gilead native -- leaves behind a wife and two young children. His death marks the eighth fatality to occur in Ohio road work zones over the past decade.

All or part of I-71 NB was closed in the area of the crash until Monday evening.

The state highway patrol is investigating the accident.
