COLUMBUS -- Police are looking into a murder and attempted suicide on Kingpin Drive in Northeast Columbus.
72-year-old Leif Mortensen called 9-1-1 just after 2 p.m. saying he had just stabbed his wife several times and stabbed himself in the neck.
The man stayed on the phone with dispatchers until Columbus police arrived at the scene. Authorities located 74-year old Margaret Mortensen inside the home suffering from stab wounds.
Medics pronounced Margaret Mortensen deceased shortly after arriving on the scene.
Mr. Mortensen was transported to Riverside with self inflicted stab wounds. He remains in stable condition.
The couple's children and neighbors are "in shock" with this crime. Vicki Kovarik says the couple was very nice and helpful. She describes them as strong Catholics. "I'm in shock. I can't believe it," said Kovarik. "My husband just help them dig out their driveway from the last big snowstorm."
Police are waiting on a search warrant to go through the home for clues as to what might have led up to this murder.
