More Snow Fences Being Used

DELAWARE — ODOT is protecting you on rural roads this winter season, and you may not even notice the extra barriers against roads that tend to get icy.
ODOT is using snow fencing to help keep wind gusts from blowing snow onto the highways, and they say they’re using more fences this year than in years past.
“That blowing snow can freeze almost instantly with our cold temperatures the snow fencing is a solution, it's easy,” ODOT’s Nancy Burton said.
Burton said it’s a cost effective way to protect drivers and also gives peace of mind to snow plow drivers.
“Without that snow fence, the minute he plows or salts the snow, if it's blowing and there's wind, it will be right back on the road,” she said.
ODOT said they used nearly 200,000 feet of snow fencing in 2012. That's up about 70,000 feet since 2011.
ABC6/FOX28 will keep you up to date on weather conditions and how to protect yourself on the roads.
