Locals React to Nightclub Fire in Brazil
NORTHWEST COLUMBUS--Eyes were glued to the Brazilian news as details unfolded about the deadly nightclub fire that claimed more than 230 lives in Santa Maria. Locals from Brazil tell ABC 6/FOX 28 that this is a tragedy. "As a pastor, as a Brazilian, it's very sad," Jurandir Beline said, pastor. A fire broke out at the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria just after 2:30 AM Sunday. An estimated 2,000 people were in the building at the time, which only had one exit. Not everyone got out alive. Paula Desouza works at the Estilo Brazil grocery. Her mother was on vacation at the time in Brazil, 4 hours north of the nightclub. "She told me a lot of people are crying. Many people lost their lives," Desouza said. Some though, think the Brazilian government should be more agressive about building codes. "I think the government now has to think more about this," Romario Angrege said. Many of those who died are believed to be college students. ---------------- Reporter: Jen French
