ICY WATER RESCUE: Neighbors' Reaction

COLUMBUS -- The pond at the Eastland on the Lake apartments is a constant reminder of tragedy for residents.
For neighbors who tried to pull a 5-year-old boy from the icy waters Thursday, the reminder is especially painful.
"I'm really disappointed that I didn't do my best to help," Sefe Almedom said as he choked back tears.
He said he'd never look at the pond the same way again.
Almedom was among a handful of people who tried to save the boy.
One of the men who tried to help died. Rescuers had to retrieve James Russell Jenkins, 30, from the pond. Jenkins was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center.
Almedom said Jenkins was one of the first in the water. He recalled the way Jenkins tried to keep the boy's head above water even though he couldn't swim very well.
The group worked with several police officers who were first on the scene to try to pull the child out.
Almedom said they tried using a board, an electrical cord, and a snow shovel as rescue tools.
It took a team of rescuers more than an hour to pull Jenkins and the boy out of the water.
The boy was flown to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where doctors continued to treat him Friday.
