Homes Evacuated Following Crash

Updated: Friday, April 5 2013, 11:56 PM EDT
COLUMBUS -- Several homes on the south side had to be evacuated as a precaution after a vehicle struck a home and a gas line.

It happened at around 11:00 p.m. Friday in the area of Oak St. and S. Champion Ave.

According to police, the driver of an SUV lost control, went up a curb right into a building, but not before taking out several gas meters.  That's when a gas line ruptured.

Several nearby homes were evacuated for a short time, while firefighters and Columbia Gas crews got the gas turned off.

It's not known why the driver of the SUV lost control or if he/she would be cited.
