Governor to Decide on Expanding Medicaid

Updated: Thursday, January 31 2013, 11:15 AM EST
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio Gov. John Kasich says he doesn't view expanding Medicaid as "Obamacare," which he opposes.

The Republican governor is expected to say Monday whether he'll opt to cover more low-income adults in the federal-state program under President Barack Obama's health care law.

He plans to release the decision along with his two-year budget proposal.

Kasich has shown strong opposition to Obama's health care overhaul -- including its mandate for almost everyone to obtain health insurance.

He said he sees the expansion decision as separate from the federal law's mandate.

Kasich spoke Thursday during a legislative preview session for journalists organized by The Associated Press.

He said his biggest concern is whether the state can trust the federal government to continue picking up the bulk of program costs.
