Genoa Twp. Divers Train for Water Rescues

GENOA TOWNSHIP -- Some central Ohio fire fighters are examining their township's retention ponds a week after a man and young boy drowned in Southeast Columbus.
Genoa Township Fire Department divers already participate in weekly training at Hoover Reservoir, but Thursday their focus was on man-made bodies of water similar to the apartment complex pond where a man recently died trying to save a five-year-old boy who fell through ice. The boy died days later.
Genoa divers worked to identify points of access at retention ponds, as well as spots where command posts can be easily established.
Divers train weekly with several water rescue tools and scuba gear, as well as a boat, which is replaced by an ice sled in the event of a frozen water rescue.
