Gas Station Workers Thwart Attempted Robbery

Updated: Wednesday, April 24 2013, 07:51 PM EDT
COLUMBUS -- A man is charged with robbery after his victims turned the tables by pulling their own gun, according to police.

ABC 6/FOX 28 obtained surveillance footage from the Sunoco store on Norton Road earlier this month that, police say, shows Scott Thomas's attempt to rob employees with a note.

In the video, the suspect is seen writing on a slip of paper, then handing the note -- which read, "I need money. Don't make me shoot -- to the clerk.

After the clerk received the note, he triggered a silent alarm that alerted his fellow employees, who then entered the room.

The video shows one clerk walk toward a back room to grab a gun. That man soon emerges, and points the weapon at the suspect.  The suspect attempts to flee, but is stopped by the employees and physically restrained

A clerk called 911 amid the struggle with the suspect, telling a dispatcher, “We got him. He’s resisting. We need the cops.”

Police arrested Thomas inside the store. Detectives say each of the employees acted in self-defense.
